Thanks Jerry,
Pendleton is a mystery to me. He stated on his application for membership into the Cherokee, he was the son of Will Thomas and he had no full brothers or sisters.
I find a "Penn" living with Samuel Parks Sherrill and Angeline Thomas Sherrill in the Cherokee census of 1860. The ages match up and he is the only Penn I have run across in that area, in that time era, that would have been taken in by Angeline and Sam.
I have been trying to determine Penn's relationship with Angeline in order to determine if they had the same mother, Catherine Hyde. I get the feeling, going through the Thomas and Hyde line that much has been left unsaid, even by Penn, in regards to Will and the Hyde family. It seems that much information about Will's unions with Indian or part Indian women has been "lost" either by history or design. This, I think, is why I'm having so much trouble finding Angeline's mother, my 5th great-grandmother.
The Will Thomas book is "Confederate Colonel and Cherokee Chief". It is mandatory reading in my home as I am the 5th great-grandson of Will Thomas.
