William "Penn" Hyde, along with a brother and two sisters were the illegitimate children of Catherine Hyde, daughter of Benjamin Hyde, Sr. and Elizabeth Leatherwood Hyde. Catherine later married Micheal Cline and had five more children. Penn was not the son of William Holland Thomas.Thomas liked Penn and took him under his wing and unofficially adopted Penn. There is a book about William Holland Thomas and I can't remember the title. It was something like "The White Chief of the Cherokee/A Confederate Colonel: William Holland Thomas". Let me know if you are interested and I'll find the true title. It does mention the relationship between W.H. Thomas and Penn.
