Hello Allen,
John Dalles here, following up on the posting you added to my question about James Hazen Hyde and Martha Leishman's family on the Hyde genforum back in December 2001...
Since my initial questions, I have learned a good bit about former US Ambassador John G. A. Leishman (1857-1924).However, the more I learn, the more questions I have.
I have been in touch with the Librarian at the Hoover Institution and the historian at the US State Department, and neither knows where Ambassador Leishman's papers are, now.
I assume that the family retains them. However, Whether that means the von Croy side of the family or the Hyde side...Well, I would like to know.
Distant members of the family (the Henderson's--John's mother's line) have been in touch with me and have told me some family oral tradition about daughter Nancy's life in Berlin.I have begun reading contemporary sources to try to confirm or deny what they have said anecdotally; I would like to know more about that, as well.
I did, finally, yesterday, learn where John and Julia Leishman are buried.Even the US State department did not know that, but I have passed the information on to them.
If you can point me in the right direction in any of this I would be very grateful.
As you may know, I am doing this research for my own "edification".I have family connections to the events in Johnstown in 1889.I have found that the many members of the old South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club went on to many outstanding accomplishments on the world stage.Ambassador Leishman, high among them.
It seems amazing to me that he did not pen his memoirs in the retirement years between 1913 and his death in 1924.Every one of the ambassadors who followed him in Switzerland, Turkey, Italy and Germany did so.(All Wilson apointees). It would seem to me that it would be a very valuable source of information for historians to have Leishman's views on the European scene...
With all good wishes,
John A. Dalles (Rev. Dr.)
