Hello Geraldine;
It appears to me, as I study my ancestors and the allied and collateral families that surrounded them, that most came from the southern part of England.At least, if going by the surnames means anything.
All of my ancestors were early colonial families of America, and they left England in the 1600's.
One of the families that my ancestors married into, was the Dorset(t) family. They were also in the Virginia's and Carolina's in the 1700's before making their way westward into Kentucky and southern Indiana.
When my Hansford ancestors moved into the new Kentucky territory in the late 1700's, they named one town "SOMERSET'and made it the county seat.The planning of the local government was set up first in the home of Thomas Hansford, brother to my four greats grandmother, Mary Hansford Short.
And, many lived in the counties of "Kent" and "Surrey" in both Virginia and North Carolina, and those names I know have southern England roots.
So, I am sure your observation is correct.At least the 'clan' I descended from, many appear to have been from the Dorsetshire area.
