Thank you for replying. My interest in Philip is actually a side line that may help in finding my own ancestors. My g-g-grandfather on my mother's side was John David VanDeusen.I am unable to find his father, his birth certificate, or where he lived at various times, except that he moved a lot.His brother was Daniel VanDeusen. The family story was that Daniel committed a crime as a teenager and spent his life in prison. I think he was 17 at the time.My g-g-grandfather John David disowned Daniel and severed relations with him.He also changed his name to VanDusen.I dug around and finally found that Daniel committed the only murder in 1878 in Albany county. He pleaded guily to stabbing a Philip Hyde and was sentenced to life in prison.Because he pleaded guilty there are no court records and as yet I can't even find it in the papers.I have not been able to find the gravesite for Philip. If I could determine the township and the date of this grevious crime I may be able to find more about my g-g-g-grandparents' whereabouts. My suspicions are that the father of Daniel and John-David was killed in the Civil War but I can't prove it.The mother of the likely candidate claims that her son was never married. My g-g-g-granmother (maiden name LaDue) married Jasper Salsburg (sometime after his wife's death in 1881.)Jasper died in Bethlehem, New York in 1898 per a deed transfer. Are you familiar with Albany County, New York?John David may have been working on a Hudson River Boat at the time of this incident but I am unsure of that fact also.John David also worked for the railroad during his lifetime.
