Steven,
Could my Phillip Hyde and your William Hyde have been brothers who emigrated to New York at or about the same time?Phillip was born between 1824 and 1829 in Cork, Ireland. According to family history, he emigrated to New York, then walked to Virginia.
Phillip had four daughters and one son, in that order. The first daughter, Elizabeth or Lizzie, was born in Ireland, according to family history; but census records indicate that all the children were born in Virginia. If Lizzie was born in Ireland, Phillip and his young family would have immigrated here between her birth, in about 1856, and 1861, when he enlisted as one of the "Irish Volunteers" in Company C (3rd), 19th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery. He was a resident of Alexandria, Virginia, at the time.
Unfortunately, Ihaven't found any record of him prior to that. He's not in 1860 or 1850 census records for Virginia, and not listed in 1860 or 1850 census indexes for other states. He wasn't in the Alexandria naturalization records I searched. Have you checked naturalization records?
Also, have you checked Civil War service records? That's were I found not only Phillip's birthplace but also a physical description of him. Also where I found that he signed his name with two ls, even though some service records and some census records spelled it with one l. He must have adopted the Philip spelling, though; his name is written with a single l on his tombstone.
Finally, Phillip's son's name was John, and William's first son's name was John. Were these two Johns named for their grandfathers? Or grandfather?A less common name might be more significant. If only William had named a son Phillip we might have something definitive .
As it is, we have two men with the last name Hyde, about the same age, one who emigrated to New York and one who may have emigrated to New York, about the same time, each of whom named his first son John. Wish I could offer more.
Martha
