Have you looked on the International Genealogical Indexes in other words 'Family Search LDS' to see if he is on there records.Ihe only other alternative is to oeder and look through church registers for the city of Manchester until you find them.You could also look through the fiche IGI for Lancashire in the LDS Library sometimes they have more info on them than on the IGI internet.You can look at shipping lists to see if William came to America on his own.Are you talking about the civil war in America don't you have war records over there.Also the census in Britain might be of help for Manchester 1831/41/51/61/71/81/91.Gillian Scates
