I have done research on the different spellings of this surname. My family comes from Virginia and West Virginia. It starts with the spelling of Hutcheson, then goes to Hutchison, and then finally Hutchinson. My Hutcheson goes from my ggg grandfather back to my gggggg grandfather. My gg grandfather changed it to Hutchison. My grandfather changed it to Hutchinson. Yes the census takers spelled it the way it was spoken. Now it does not mean that they are one family. There are several different Hutch(I, IN, E)son famliy lines. The Hutcheson name usally comes from Scottish background. The Hutchison name can come from both Scottish and also English backgrounds. The Hutchinson name usally comes from the English background. If I can help you in any way, I am more than willing.
