First place to start is who are your parents, great-grandparents, and great-great grandparents. If you know dates of death, these may be traced through the Social Security Death Index. If you know places of birth, you may be able to use the censues to locate the families. You would need name, date and place of birth, marriage, and death for each person and couple mentioned above to start.
