My father was Robert Edward Hutchinson born 1924 Goole,Yorkshire,England. May dad did some research into the Hutchinson name when I was a child. He came up with the same info that your relative had, that we were descended from the McDonald clan.
I have recently found that the coat of arms that you describe belong to family of Hely-hutchinson, who were Earls of Donoughmore in Ireland. They were a very distinguished family of Anglo-Irish gentry, turned aristocrats.
I found this info from an article in a family tree mag. Please let me know if you want to know more of what it said.
Joanna
