William Hutchins of Yancey County - Son of Wright Hutchins - Son of Thomas Hutch

Pinning down the birth-date of William Hutchins of Yancey County (1812-13-14 - 1906) is difficult because of conflicting information from various sources. i.e. According to the formula on Williams cemetery transcription, <http://files.usgwarchives.org/nc/yancey/cemeteries/young03.txt>
his birth-date would be Nov. 18, 1814, however the transcriber cautions that the inscription is "hard to read". 1814 however, is also the year that the 1850 census indicates would be the year that William was born.

In contrast to that however is Williams age as shown in the 1860 and the 1880 census. Those sources indicate that 1812 was Williams year of birth. 1812 is also the year given for Williams birth on page 36 of the book "William Hutchins of Carolina" by Jack Randolph Hutchins, Pub. 1994.

Yet a third year can be concluded from the 1870 census, which lists Williams age as 57, which - if true, would make 1813 the year of his birth.

1890 census data is not available as it was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921. William is not listed in the 1900 census, so information from those sources is not available.

To add yet another date which has caused some confusion, Williams nephew - William Hutchins of Mitchell County - (son of William "Beatey" Hutchins, son of Thomas), was born in 1818. The "One World Family Tree" incorrectly cites this date (1818) as a possible birth-date for William Hutchins of Yancey County (son of Wright Hutchins). It is not a possible date for William Hutchins of Yancey County. However, just to make it difficult for us researchers, all three "William Hutchins" just mentioned are descended from Thomas Hutchins - (1753-1843), and were alive at the same time (1812 - 1820), and lived within close proximity of each other.
