Posting this to promote comment and perhaps even help someone. <G> Working on my daughter in law's family, have just this week started researching this branch of Hutchens/Hutchins/Hutchings family that in earlier days seems to have used all three spellings interchageably.

Beginning with the most recent:

Allen Hutchens b. 1873 in Marshall, Clark IL, d. 1952 in Dickinson IA. Lived at times in Edgar County IL. Has been found in censuses from 1880 to 1930.

George Hutchens, b. 1850 in Clark County IN, m. Martha Melinda Johnson abt 1873, had at least 3 kids, Allen, Charles and Eliza. In 1880, was living in Dolson Twp, Clark IL next door to his father, [Andrew] Jackson Hutchens.

Andrew Jackson Hutchens/Hutchings, b. 1818 in Bethlehem, Clark IN, m. Eliza Elliott in 1843, and lived until 1914. Children: John H., May J., George, Julia or Julian and Sarah C. Hutchens. Andrew is found with either spelling of his surname and also alternates between A. J., Andrew and Jackson as his first name. He was granted a land patent under the name Jackson Hutchings in the area NNW of Marshall, Clark IL in 1849.

Father, based on circumstantial evidence:
Esrom Hutchings b. 1792 in VA, d. 1866 in Dolson, Clark IN. Married Mary (Polly) Fifer in 1815, and they had at least nine children, among them sons Andrew Jackson, George, and Stephen. Esrom is found in censuses beginning in 1820 in Bethlehem, Clark IN to 1860 in Dolson Twp, Clark IL. Esrom as well as sons George, Jackson and Stephen obtained land patents in Clark County IL in the late 1840's, no more than two miles from each other, all of them a few miles NNW of Marshall, Clark IL.

John or Joseph (depending on the source) Hutchings b. abt 1760 in England, d. bef 1820, m. Catherine Davis abt 1780, had 7 children: Francis/Frank, Esrom, Margaret, Nellie, Joseph, John and Aquilla. It appears that John/Joseph died soon after arriving with his family in Clark IN, as Catherine is found as the HOH in 1820 in Washington, Clark IN, where she died in 1843. It appears that all of their male children remained in Clark County IN, except for Esrom, who took his family to Clark County IL, perhaps to claim his military land bounty for service in the War of 1812? --not researched yet.

You friendly comments and corrections requested. <G>
