Jeff, that's cool!I imagine your Isabelle and my Emily are one and the same.I have, since first posting, a lot more information. The following is a brief bit:
Feb. 2005.Just found in a history of Wabasha, Minnesota that one of the early settlers (1838) was a Pierre Hortibese, nephew of Chief Wapashaw. He was very likely the father of the three kids.
From Prairie du Chien Baptisms, 1817:
May 1, 1817, Jean Pierre Hortibeze, fourteen years of age, the father being J. Bte. Hortibize, the mother being a Sioux woman.Godfather: father M. Dunand.Godmother, Domitille Brisebois.
Pierre is listed on the 1837 census of Mixed-blood Sioux, as are Pierre Jr. (or 3rd) age 2 and Therese age 4.The children are listed as 1/4 breed, the census counting only the Woodland Sioux (in this case Mdewakanton) blood.Emily was supposedly a full blood Ojibwa. The kids were 3/4 Indian.
I'd love to know which child of Isabelle you descend from. And please email me directly. You'll find the book if you google Google Books for Wabasha County history. I have never proved for sure that that Pierre is "my" Pierre, but given dates and locations it seems very likely.I'm traveling and have only partial information with me.My husband is a desendant of Emily's by Dennis Cherrier "married to the woman by Indian custom" However, I've learned a lotabout the Hurtubese [email protected]
