Moses Hurt Sr. was one of three brothers, Benjamin, Moses, and Philemon Hurt who lived in Caroline County, Virginia, in the early part of the 1700's. Philemon Hurt died there in 1739. Benjamin Hurt died there in 1769. Moses Hurt moved from Caroline County to Amelia County, Virginia shortly after buying from Laughlin Flyn 800 acres of land on the north bank of the Great Nottoway River in 1750. This 800 acres of land is in what is now Nottoway County, which was cut off from Amelia County in 1788 and formed into the new county of Nottoway. Moses Hurt died on his place in 1783. We know that he was living in Amelia County as early as 1752, for in that year he and his wife, Ann Hurt, signed a deed conveying to Thomas Chambers 300 acres of his new 800 acre place and in which he stated that he was living in Amelia County then.
Amelia County Land Book Number 3 page 539. The land purchase from Laughlin Flynn, a Blacksmith, and his wife Elizabeth took place on the 16th day of January 1750. Moses Hurts occupation was listed as a Planter of the County of Caroline.
