From "Hurst Family of Georgia" by Robert R. Hurst
In 1607 the English founded their first successful settlement, Jamestown, in America. Their settlement did not prosper so well during the first few years, and the English would probably been completely exterminated had it not been for the able leadership of Captain John Smith. In 1618, the Virginia Company decided to revitalize and expand their venture by means of a reform program
which they inaugurated in 1618 under the leadership of Sir Edwin Sandys, a prominent figurein the English House of Commons. As a result of this new move, the ship "Treasurer" landed in Jamestown in August of 1618 with forty aboard.
Tobias Hurst, twenty-two years of age at that time, was one of those forty. He is the first Hurst to set foot in America. The venture must have been a success that year for the population, which was 400 at the beginning of the year, increased to 1000 by its end.
Tobias probably went to work at Captain Wardo's plantation located in the present Isle of Wight County. It remains unknown as to whether Tobias married and had
children. One source lists John Hurst as his son. John married Dorothy Knight and had a son, John Hurst, who married Judith Moore, the daughter of Ephroditus.
John had a son, William Hurst, who married first Christian McKinnie and second Sarah Oliver, the daughter of John. This William Hurst and his second wife, Sarah, are the progenitors of the family herein described.

of Thomas Co Ga from 1840-1841. Lived 3 miles south of Ochlocknee Ga. Buried in
the Hendry Cemetery in Thomas Co Ga beside his wife.
John Jack and Henrietta Hurst had the following children:
1. James M. Hurst b. Thomas Co Ga 8/11/1833. He married Georgia Ann Hendry in Thomas
Co Ga4/17/1855. Georgia died 5/14/1928 in Thomasville Ga. Her body was
interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Co Ga on 3/23/1854.

64. Charles Edward Hurst (William4, William Broad3, William2, John1) was born in Thomas
Co Ga on Feb 18, 1849. Charles died Nov. 9, 1921.
He married Jessie Anna Tanner. Jessie was born in 1860. Jessie died Sept 29, 1898
at 38 years of age. She came from a prominent old family, part of which owned a
large portion of the Arredando Spanish Land Grant in Levy and Marion Counties, Fla.
Charles and Jessie moved to Marion Co and settled close to where Alachus, Levy
and Marion counties join. Jessie Anna was always a frail woman and was crippled,
possibly from infantile paralysis. She died in Marion Co FL on Sept. 29, 1898 and was
buried in Wachahocta Baptis Church Cemetery. From Robert Hurst's book, "Hurst Family
in Georgia".
Charles Edward Hurst married Ludie Pauline Johnson Scott. Ludie was the
daughter of Henry James David Johnson and Susan Ella Glenn.
Charles Edward Hurst and Jessie Anna Tanner had the following children:
1. Walter Hurst. Died in infancy.
2. Arthur Tanner b. 12/3/1880. Died June 15, 1896 at 15 years of age.
3. Thomas Edward Hurst b. Sept 22, 1883.
