My ggrandfather, John C. LEWIS, testified in an application for government reparations from the Trail of Tears that his mother Elizabeth (Betty) HURST (born 1 Apr 1826 in Effingham Co., GA) was related to Cherokee Indians. I can't find the connection. Betty's father was William Broad HURST, Jr. b.1798 in Effingham Co, GA and d.1866 Jefferson Co, Florida. Her mother was Sarah Elizabeth WILDER, b. 9 Aug 1797 in Effingham Co., GA. and d. 1839 Jefferson Co, FL. Is there Cherokee blood in the HURST family?
