James and Nancy Hunter circa 1800
Can you help?
I am seeking to develop further information about a Lt. (Captain) James Hunter and his wife/widow Nancy (?Nee:Robinson)Hunter. Both were in the St. Johns area of Quebec. The time period is 1776 through at least 1812.
He was Captain of, at least, the “Maria” on Lake Champlain during the American Revolution. He probably served as an Armed Boatman,in 1781.There is a powerful suggestion that James and Nancy were “Loyalists”.Nancy became a widow about 1798.She remarried about 1820 to a James Watson, in St. Johns, Quebec.
They Petitioned the Crown for Lands in Lower Canada from 1792 to at least 1812.Land was granted to Widow Nancy in the Townships ofBarford, Potton, and Hemmingford, it seems.Very probably her heirs settled the lands therein.
