How interesting that your ancestor is Charles! My ancestor is William Henry, Jr.'s brother, Charles Bishop Hunt.He was a teacher in Athens his entire life. William Henry Sr. must have had a connection with Josiah Meigs in New Haven. It wouldn't have been church-related through John Hunt, because Meigs wasn't Anglican (or maybe it was Episcopalian after the war).William Sr. would have been the right age to be at student at Yale when Meigs was a professor.Meigs and the other early presidents of UGA were famous for bringing old Yale connections down to Athens.William Sr. got in a little trouble with the trustees in 1813 when he built two houses on UGA property. He said he didn't realize it was state-owned land or something. The trustees owed him $60.00 and decided in lieu of payment, they would let him keep the houses and two acres. Can you imagine what it was like to leave New Haven to come to Athens, which at the time had three buildings (log cabins) on the campus?
Would love to hear anything you have on the family.
