This is a maiden name of my mother who was born near city of Poltava in the Ukraine in 1920s. Such a family name is quite unusual for Eastern Slavs, so it seems that it's been brought from outside of Russia. A couple of centuries ago a number of military regiments were created in Poltava region which were populated with Serbs, Hungarian, Czechs, Slovacs, etc. May be my ancestor was one of them?
Can anybody tell me if the family name Ovd'yash, Ovdiyash, Ovdyash or anylike looks like Hungarian?
