People were not "given" names at Ellis Island; there may have been mistranscriptions or misspellings by the immigration officer, or more likely, it was a name that he took in order to be more English-sounding. There are plenty of individuals with the surname Zavada that came through Ellis Island including this one who may be your Joseph: Ship Name: Friedrich der Grosse Arrival Date: June 28, 1899 Sailed From: Bremen Zavada, Joszef, aged 20(?), married, labourer, nationality: Hungaria (sic); last residence: Zanuto; bound for his cousin, Janos Pawejak(?), 3435 Manson(?) Street, Pittsburgh. In the timeframe in which Joszek was born, that part of the world was all part of Hungary. I found a WWI Draft Registration card, in the name of Joseph Savada, b. 10 April 1879, aged 39 (in 1918), of Rural Route No. 4, Pinc????, Bay Co., Michigan; he gives his nationality as a Pole claimed by Austria; his nearest relative is his wife, Mary Savada of Wisola(?), Austria. Are either of these the right individual? Notify Administrator about this message?
