They did not speak Russian nor were they Russians! They were Ruthenians aka Rusyn or Carpatho-Rusyn... there is a distinct difference. Rusyns for the most part are Greek Catholics aka Byzantine Rite Catholic... some are Orthodox. This group comes from the region of Eastern Slovakia, SE Poland, western Ukraine and the Slavonia region of Croatia. It was probably easier to say they were Russian than to try to explain the difference... much like some people from old Austria said they were Hungary-Dutch or Hunky (which by the way is a derogetory term) or whatever... To help understand the history of this group and to assist with your genealogy I would recommend looking at the web pages below http://www.carpatho-rusyn.org/indexgen.htm http://www.rusyn.com/ http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13278a.htm Robert Jerin Croatian Heritage Museum Cleveland Ohio Notify Administrator about this message?
