I am seeking information about HUMPHRYES & HUMPHRIES from Devon, Southern England, some of whom emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 aboard the ship “La Hogue”. Children of Richard HUMPHRYES of Chudleigh, Devon (born about 1782), and wife Susannah (nee Discombe)include Charlotte(1813- ?)Richard (1815-1890, died in New Zealand)John (a grocer born 1818 - died about 1865, married Sophia CHURCH)Sarah (1822 - ?). Richard HUMPHRYES, a sawyer, born 1815 Chudleigh, Devon, married Elizabeth HORSWELL at Ringmore, Devon about1842. Their children born Chudleigh were Frederick H (1846)John E (1848) Edmund J (1851)and Walter S (1853). The family moved to Plymouth about 1855, and two more children were born at Plymouth: David J (1856)and Theodore R (1859).While in Plymouth the family began to spell their surname HUMPHRIES. In 1874 Richard and Elizabeth HUMPHRIES emigrated to New Zealand aboard the "La Hogue" taking only their three youngest children: Walter, David and Theodore Richard(usually known by his second name, Richard). The three eldest sons: Frederick Horswell HUMPHRYES/IES; and John Edwin HUMPHRIES/IES; and Edmund Jeffery HUMPHRYES/IES, appear to have remained in Devon. Son David Jesse Horswell HUMPHRIES married Mary STEVENS at Wellington 9 May 1878. Children of David and Mary HUMPHRIES (all born in New Zealand) Amelia Mary (Millie) c.1878 Frederick William (Fred) c.1880 Albert Cuthbert (Bert) c.1881 Edith Mabel 23 Dec 1882, at Fielding. m. James L CARTER 26 Aug 1903 at Rongotea, Fielding. d.10 Mar 1957 at Stratford. b Hawera Cem.
