Hi Jacqueline
I have been away from genealogy for quite a while so I was very surprised to see your requests and the information posted by Alison when I looked at the Humphries page. Perhaps it will stir me to get back to my family study.
My gggggrandfather was James Humphries ( wife - Ann ) who was born in 1873. In the 1851 census he was mentioned as living in Southover Street, Wells, Somersetshire. He was a sawyer, married, aged 68. His birthplace was Butleigh, southeast of Wells.
Their son, James (b 1813), married Martha Pope of Wells (b 1813) and they too named a son, James Job. Their other children were Samual, George, Phillip, maybe a John - infant death?, Alice who was born 1841 and died 1844, Mary Francis who came to New Zealand in 1887, Elizabeth (b. 1859) and Martha.
James Job ( born 1845 and who died in Ponsonby in Auckland on Feb 16, 1944) was my ggfather. His wife was Elizabeth Chard who was born in Midsomer Norton in Somerset in or about 1815. Her father was Joseph Chard and he married an Elizabeth Humphries. Two strains of the family name.
James Job and Elizabeth migrated to New Zealnd in 1872. They had nine children and my gfather was Arthur Edwin who died in 1955. I only met him once in 1954. Arthur Edwin married Julia Edgar Neils and my father, Reginald Hayward Humphries was the sixth of their eight children. Arthur later divorced Julia and married her widowed sister, Elizabeth Ruthberg and they had three children. Grandma Julia married Ted Logan and they had three children and they also raised my dad.
My parents, Reginald and Marguerite, raised eight children. I am the second oldest. All except my sister, Susan of Del Rio, Texas, and me in Kelowna, BC, Canada still live in Otago, New Zealand. At last count and birthdates, there are 71 descendants of Reg aka "Bill Logan" and Marge still alive. My parents died in 1978 and 1988.
We are of "Somerset stock" - I have been through Bath and Wells. My second cousin, Judi Cantlon, actually did extensive research in that area of England. Surely there's some links somewhere.
Cheers, Reg
