Looking for male Humphries interested in participating in DNA testing for genealogy purposes (cheek swab) for the Humphrey(s) surname group project at www.familytreedna.com. We are particularly looking for descendants of the sons of John and Mary White Humphries who jointly received a piece of land on Allen’s Creek in Brunswick Co. Va. from their father in his will dated 1738. This land was in Lunenburg Co. when it was granted to four sons of John Humphries in 1747. The sons were William, John, Thomas and Charles Humphries.

All four sons eventually moved to Wake Co., NC. Thomas appears to have died in Wake Co., NC about 1792, leaving no surviving issue. William went to Laurens Co., SC about 1777. John stayed in Lunenburg Co. VA in the part that became Mecklenburg Co. He moved to Wake Co. NC about 1792 and died in nearby Person Co., NC in 1801. Charles Humphries left Wake Co. in 1779 and moved to Chester Co., SC where he died about 1803. Charles and his descendants were the subjects of the book “Ancestors and Descendants of Charles Humphries (d. 1837) of Union District, South Carolina 1677-1984,” by Brent Holcomb.

John Humphries who died 1801 in Person Co., NC had sons “Virginia” John Humphries, Thomas, Robert, Henry and Benjamin. They lived mainly in Wake and Person Counties, NC around 1800. Charles Humphries had sons John, Absalom, Thomas, Bennett, Charles and Richard Humphries. They lived mainly in Chester and Union Counties, SC. Absalom and Thomas moved to Christian Co. KY (which became Trigg County). At least some of these sons may have all-male line Humphries descendants alive today who are eligible to participate in the Humphrey(s) family Y-DNA project.

Descendants of more than seven separate Humphrey(s) clans have been identified in the DNA project so far. Four of these clusters correspond to a Humphrey family of Connecticut and Massachusetts, (the focus of the original project), and some others are descendants and collateral relatives of William Humphries of Rutherford Co., N.C. and the cluster of descendants that are the subject of this message from the Brunswick Va. Humphries family.

We are also especially interested in having all-male line descendants of the Humphries family of Person Co., NC participate in the testing process. Henry Humphries, son of John II above, moved to Person Co. about 1795. We believe that he and his wife Margaret Dixon were the progenitors of the large Humphries family that lived in Person Co. in the early 1800s. An alternate claim has been made that the Humphries family in Person Co. was descended from William Humphries of Caswell County, NC. DNA testing could help resolve the debate.

Please contact me or Mike Humphrey, Humphrey Project administrator at mikenhumphrey@aol.com if you want to participate in the testing or if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Charlene Humphries Herreid
