MaryLou,
I am related to the Humphreys family of Mississippi and Virginia. This Humphreys family was the first family with this surname to settle in what is called " The Scotch Settlement " area of Mississippi in 1790.At the time this region belonged to Spain and was called West Florida. When I asked my grandmother what kind of name Humphreys was she answered it is 'Scots Irish'.For that reason I always thought it was a Scottish name. However, further research has revealed Humphrey to be an ancient Anglo-Saxon name common to Germany and Scandinavia. The name was introduced to the British Isles by the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and Danes. It was later reintroduced by the Normans in 1066.I am curious how widespread this surname is in present day Scotland and what your family tradition has to say about this ancestral name.
