A letter quoted in The Humphreys Family in America by Frederick Humphreys, M. D. published privately in 1883.Although many of the lineages that Frederick Humphreys presents are totally impossible for no other reason than the dating, there are little nuggets here and there that can be verified. One of those nuggets is the following letter:"J. A. Y. Humphreys, 2d son of John Humphreys (son of ______ Humphreys, a native of Wales, so said), was born in 1802.He married Miss May first, daughter of Stephen May; 2d wife, Rebecca Carpenter (and settled in Nelson County, Ky.), whose mother was a Slaughter.[Can't find the reference, just the page copy: Rebecca Delph Carpenter m. John A. Y. Humphreys -- could this be Alexander Yarborough? --, teacher and farmer of Nelson County, formerly of Spotsylvania County Va.Her parents are Margaret Bowie SLAUGHTER and Samuel Carpenter.]The May family was from Petersburg, VA., and last wife's relations were from Madison and Culpeper County, Virginia. My father, John Humphreys, married ______ McConchie, 3d daughter of Alex'r McConchie [Fauquier Co., VA, Marriage Bond: John HUMPHREY & Dorothy McCONHIE 21 April 1790; Bondsman, Robert McCONCHIE], I suppose of Scotch descendants. My father had one brother younger than himself, named Thomas Humphreys, who married a Miss Richards , daughter of Major James Richards [Probably Captain William RICHARDS], of Culpeper County, Va., and by whom he had, I am informed, twenty-one children, of which they raised seventeen [I have only found fourteen] -- some of them living in Madison County, VA., some in Culpeper, some in Fauquier County, and elsewhere. My father had ten children, of which he raised nine -- six daughters and three sons -- of whom I am the only one living. My father's mother was of the name of Yarborough; of what descent I do not know -- probably English. My father was a farmer and mechanic. My uncle, Thos. Humphreys, was a farmer in Culpeper County. He has a son, Thos. J. Humphreys, living at Madison Ct. House, in Va., of some distinction as a lawyer, from whom more information respecting our ancestry may be had than I can give, having lived a distance so long, and separated from the family associations. Our friend may, perhaps, accomplish more by consulting him.I am now in my 67th year, not confined my remarks in shape or form of a table which is furnished. We have several families in the county of our name. They spell this name without the "s", however, and if any way related, I don't know it.They, I think, are from Maryland originally. My grand father McConchie was from Maryland I think, and died a wealthy farmer of Fauquire County, Virginia. My father lived and raised his family in Spotsylvania, VA., about 20 miles from Fredericksburg.

=======================From Historical Southern Families Volume XIX, pages 97 - 101, we have the information that Thomas Humphreys was born in Culpeper Co., VA in 1765 and died at "Locust Hill" Culpeper Co., VA in 1849.Although Ms. Boddie does not say where she obtained the birth date, it is certainly viable based on census data. And the death date fits with Thomas' will.Since Historical Southern Families is easily obtainable, I will not quote it here. However, Mrs. Boddie states that the father of Thomas Humphreys is James Humphreys, however, she does not say why.She does say that James Humphreys was born in Culpeper Co., in 1741, and died after 1784, married Rachel, again with no reason given. She also says he may have moved from Culpeper as there is no will recorded there.Talk about "leap of faith" reasoning.Mrs. Boddie also says that James Humphreys is the son of John Humphreys of Brumfield Parish, Culpeper Co., VA., based upon this John's will where he leaves property to a James, Benjamin, Jesse, Jonathan and Mary.Mr. King says the same thing because there was no one else around in Culpeper County.

My contention is that Thomas' line is possibly from Spotsylvania Co., VA where his "supposed" brother lived. His father may or may not be a James.I have estimated that John Humphreys was born 1758 - 1770, and died 1828 - 1854.His birth date range is based upon his marriage date of 1790, with the later date based on a reasonable age for marriage (20), and the age at which his brother Thomas married (32) for the earlier date.I estimated his death date upon a normal life span of 70 years for the early date, and his brother Thomas's age at death of 84 for the later date. And also based on Thomas's marriage and age at death, I would not be surprised if Thomas and John's father did get married to the Yarborough lady around 1750 and die around 1800, but this estimate is really stretching it.
