St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, 15 December 1905:

15 December 1915
Kane Co. Coroner
---
William Humphrey Dies
At Geneva Home After
Long Illness

The funeral of William Humphrey, who after a long illness died Friday, was held Sunday at 2 o'clock from the late home at Geneva.

He was born at Oswego, N.Y., December 27, 1851. when he was three years old, his parents moved to Illinois, settling on a farm two miles west of St. Charles. In 1871 Mr. Humphrey entered the employ of Allen, Mackey and Palmer of Chicago, who conducted a wholesale carpet and paper business, where he had charge of he paper department for two years. He then entered into partnership with his brother in the grocery business in Geneva. Disposing of the business he spent four years in California. He then returned to Kane county to look after his property interests, which consisted of two large farms west of town. this property was sold to the state and is now a part of he tract belonging to the St. Charles Boy's Home.

He then engaged i the feed business, which he followed a number of years. An extensive item in his business was the trade which he established for the Pillsbury brands of flour, for which he had the exclusive agency in St. Charles township. His sales for one year on this one article alone amounted to $11,800. During the tine he was engaged in business inSt. Charles and also while he was in the west he continued to make his home at Geneva. For a brief period Mr. Humphrey was engaged in real estate business in South Dakota.

In 1878 he married Miss Nettie Wilson, daughter of John Wilson, a prominent resident of Kane county and sister to David and John
Wilson and the late Walter Wilson. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Jessie, and a son, Russel, who, with the widow, survive him.

Deceased was a commissioner in St. Charles township for fourteen years and at the time of his death was an alderman of the city of Geneva. In 1904 Mr. Humphrey received the nomination for coroner on the republican ticket and in November of that year was elected to office, the duties of which he performed until taken ill. He was a member of Geneva lodge, Knights of Pythias.

Coroner Humphrey's death calls to mind the fact that he is the fourth county official who has died while holding office in the past few years. Marvin Quackenbush, county superintendent of schools, died in April 1903. John F. Dewey, circuit clerk and former editor of the Chronicle, died early in the fall of 1899. Benjamin E. Gould of the same office perished in the Iroquois theater fire.

C.E. Cook and E.T. Cassidy were St. Charles pall bearers at the funeral.
