Mulatto is very ambiguous. From what I’ve read it can have several meanings African-American, Native American, or Spanish American mixed with Caucasian. The other question is would it have been better to be of African American or Native American at the time? African American’s were not removed from their homes under the Indian removal act. I joined the Northern Cherokee by being related to James G. Human and Mary Ann Miller. Both are on their tribal roles. In the 1900’s censes if you lived on a reservation or were married to a member of the tribe you were counted as Indian.
