Hi Norman,
I am a cousin of yours through your grandmother, Myrtle B. (Hull) Judd's line. Her father was Arthur Hull, who was a son of Samuel W. Hull (who died around the time of the Battle of Cold Harbor during the Civil War). Samuel's father, George P. Hull, was a brother of my gr-gr-gr grandfather, Samuel E. Hull and moved with him to Manitowac, WI in the mid-1800s.
George P. Hull and his wife, Sally Ann Spencer, agreed to live seperately from one another in a document signed on January 14, 1850, now in the County Clerk’s Office in Mayville, NY, George promised not to treat her with violence or to cause trouble to anyone in the family who might want to entertain her at their home. He also agreed to let her live on the property and to refrain from taking any of her possessions while she was near him.
On May 17, 1853, George and Sally “his wife,” signed the rights to their land in Sherman over to David Doolittle .
When their son, Samuel was old enough, namely January 17, 1859, he signed a deed that established his ownership of property in Sherman, land that his wife sold to Jared Knickerbocker on April 4, 1865.
In 1860, George was shown living alone in Sherman on a farm next to Hardy Cushing and Thomas Adkins. His post office was located at French Creek.
George finally sold his land in Sherman to Phineas S. Page, March 25, 1865 . It was likely this time that he left New York for the state of Wisconsin, where his younger brother, Samuel, had moved years earlier.
The 1870 federal census shows George alone at the age of 63 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He was working as a laborer in the home of 44-year old German immigrant Hate "Rurngey" (Rurvgey? Rurrigey?). Nearby is the family of his younger brother, Samuel E. Hull, who had lived in Wisconsin since the 1830’s.
In 1880, Sally Ann Hull (age 75) was living in the home of Henry and Maggie Haserkamp in Chautauqua County.
I have more information on this family. I would love to know more about yours.
