Hughs to Hughes name change upon immigration?

Family folklore says "the brothers" (I don't know how many of them) changed the spelling of their last name from Hughes to Hughs when they arrived in the states, so they could more easily keep track of each other while in America.

I have no names, no dates - just this little story. I'm told "the brothers" came from possibly Ireland/Scottland area.

Has anyone else been told this story. I'm grasping at straws and will explore any possible connections or similarities in stories.

Thanks!
