MURDER: Hudson & Hughes Feud, Granby, Missouri
According to Banks family legend, Edward Banks was killed as an innocent bystander in a shooting in Granby, Newton County, MO sometime between 1860 and 1871. Reportedly, a store owner named Hudson shot at a man named Hughes as Hughes came out of the post office and hit Edward by mistake.
Edward was the son of Moses Banks and Charlotte Grindstaff. He was born in Tennessee (probably Carter County) about 1825. The family moved to Mo about 1835. By mid 1848, Edward was married to Mary Shipman, the widow of William Shipman. Edward raised several Shipman children and had at least two sons of his own, Thomas W. (born about 1852) and Joseph W. (born February 24, 1854, died Neosho, MO December 17, 1943).
Documenting this legend is one of the holy grails of Banks family researchers. If anyone can help, or just has information on any of these people, please let me know.
