Since I posted my message to you, I've been doing further research on the whole area ofShakespeare, NM, and SE Arizona.I'm in Tucson, and my mother's family came from Willcox, so the area is generally familiar to me.I came across an interesting book called "A Portal to Paradise" by Alden Hayes published in 1999.It's a history of the whole area surrounding the Chiricahua Mountains. On page 124, the author states that Jim Hughes' father was Nick Hughes and his mother was a Mexican woman.Jim was born in the vicinity of Janos, Chihuahua. The family subsequentlymoved to the San Simon Cienega of Arizona in around 1880 as best as I can determine. On page 147, the author states that Nick Hughes sold his San Simon ranch in 1883 after Geronimo made a particularly devastating raid up from Mexico. He moved the family to Shakespeare.
I photographed Jim Hughes' headstone. There were no other Hughes graves nearby, but the stone looks relatively new -- certainly not 100 years old -- and there were recent flowers placed on the grave, so there may be Hughes descendants in the area. The inscription on the headstone is as follows:"In Loving Remembrance of James H. Hughes, Died Nov 22, 1899, Aged 35 years, 1 mo, 5 days.Blessed are the Dead which Die in the Lord."
I'd be interested in anything you find since it might connect into my family.Where are you located?Good luck.Jim Linam
