I am looking for the parents of a William H Hughs born around 1841-1844.
In the 1850 Belpre Twp, Washington Co, OH census, he is listed as follows:
Neil McGeachy, 55 male, born Scotland
Joanna McGeachy, 27, female, born Pennsylvania
Ellen McGeachy, 1/12, female, born Ohio
William H. Hughs, 6, male, born Pennsylvania
In the 1860 Barlow Twp, Washington Co, OH census, William is still in the home of Neil McGeachy, but he is listed as William H. McGeachy, age 19. William kept the name McGachey. In 1862, he enlisted in the 125th OVI as William McGachey, age 21. He married Mary Stoup and had several daughters. They divorced, and he married Annie M. Nixon of Perry Co, OH. William died in 1915 in Vinton, Co, OH. His widow and two young sons moved to Iowa. William’s youngest son, who died in 1985, insisted that he was Welsh.
I don’t know if William was orphaned or if Joanna was his mother. His 1880 census indicates that his parents were both born in Pennsylvania. If anyone has any information about a William H. Hughes born in Pennsylvania or possibly Ohio who was left without a father, it would be greatly appreciated.
