Hi Martha:
Great to hear from you!The summer was a tough one for me, too.I have found out a couple of things, though.
I live near a road called Missouri Flat Road here in El Dorado County. In doing some local research, I found mention of a large wagon train from Missouri which came to the area in late summer 1850 and which decided to stay here instead of moving on.The people began building cabins in a grassy flat area near Diamond Springs, which is a little town kind of at the end of the current Missouri Flat Road, and are credited with building up the town of Diamond Springs.I haven't yet found if this is our wagon train, but I did find John Hughes' nephew, Hiram Hughes, and his family ennumerated in the county just a short time later, in the 1850 US census. They were running a hotel. Hiram Hughes can be traced in all the census records in California from 1850 until his death. In fact, he has claimed a little fame some years after he left El Dorado County as the discoverer of copper in this state. He named his mine the "Napoleon," after his son.You can find multiple references to this if you google "Hiram Hughes."
Anyway, yes, of course, I am very interested.I also have, courtesy of John Pace, a cousin, a one-page genealogy by John Hughes' grandson, Daniel Simpson Hughes.I will email a copy if you would like---let me know where to send it.
Take care, and thanks for emailing back.
Shanna
