HALLOWELL -- Rachel L. Hughes, 88, of Lincoln Street died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Hallowell on Oct. 25, 1915, the daughter of Martin and Gertrude (Hamilton) Hughes.
Rachel was a graduate of Hallowell High School, class of 1934. She had worked for the state of Maine as a data processor for 34 years and during World War II had worked at Bath Iron Works.
For more than 80 years, she has been spending time at her camp on Cobbossee Lake. She especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends there. She was a member of the retired Maine state employees Association.
She was predeceased by a brother, John Hughes; and a sister, Sarah Brewer.
She is survived by four nieces, Susan Berthiaume and her husband, Fran, of Fort Kent, Ellen Belair and her husband Jim of Tilton, N.H., Linda Kelley and her husband, Bill, of Raymond, and Heidi Hughes of Frederick, Md.; three nephews, Stephen Brewer of Rangeley, Martin Hughes of New Jersey and Jon Hughes of Bradenton, Fla.; 16 great- and five great-great-nieces and nephews; and three special cousins, Beverlee Grady of Randolph, Barbara Martin of Randolph and Clearwater, Fla., and Paul Dow of Turner.
Visiting will be 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hallowell Cemetery in the spring.
