Carolyn,
Those early Hugharts are really hard to figure out and unfortunately, I don't have a clue as to who the parents of your 1790 KY William might be. Supposedly some of the sons of James Hughart of Greenbrier went to KY in early 1800s at least briefly but don't know if any stayed.James and Margaret Hughart of Bath county appear to have had a son William around that time but he is still in Bath Co in 1820.
Except for those who appear in later census records, I've not found any well documented birthdates though others have "given" them birthdates and put them with specific families. So that makes it even harder to make educated guesses.
My study of the records for Augusta, Greenbrier, and Bath Counties shows the liklihood of more than one Hughart family coming to VA frontier in 1740s-50s. For instance, we've never figured out who the father was of James of Greenbrier but it does NOT appear to be James of Augusta (d. 1767)
And we know there were probably 2 ADULT William Hugharts alive in the 1770s -- as one continues to appear in the Greenbrier records after the "Jackson River" William (brother of Thomas and son of James-d.1767) is listed as dec'd in 1775 Botetourt Co records. Some list the Greenbrier William b. ca 1765, and a son of Greenbrier James but he could not have that late of a birthdate and be on so many Greenbrier land records and petitions prior to 1785.
For instance:1774, Jan 1: Greenbrier Co: Survey made for Wm HUGART of 400 acres lying in Greenbrier Co on Sinking Creek, adjoining land of Gen Lewis (Andrew) and James HUGART.William is certified by Commissioners as entitled to land by settlement before Jan 1, 1778. (Greenbrier Co, WVA Land Entry Bk.) This date would be too early for a William Hughart b. 1765 as he'd only be 9 and not able to have land.
So I'm curious about the KY land grants to a William Hughart in 1775, the same year a William is listed as deceased in Botetourt Co. records. This latter William appears to be brother of Thomas on the Calfpasture and son of James (d. 1767)If William appears in any other KY records (ie did he sell the land?) perhaps it is the Greenbrier William.
Mysteries, mysteries.I know it doesn't help you but I do appreciate the info on the "southern" branch of Hugharts!
