Unfortunately I do not have a source at my fingertips for the statement that George Hufford (son of Christian and Ann Hufford) died in 1828 "at the hands of assasins."This probably came from a letter from Mrs. Archibald many years ago.Conceivably there might have been a sketch on George's son Henry in the history of Putnam County, Indiana, that so stated.
I do not know the place of death for sure, but surmise that it was likely Woodford County, Ky., for at least his estate was administered there. You might check the criminal docket for Woodford County for 1828 and following years. You may find nothing.Somehow I suspect that the assasins may not have been brought to justice, considering the primitive nature of crime solving resources available at the time.
For a documentary source that would show that George did not survive to anything like 1856, I would point you to Woodford County Deed Book M, page 78.There we find that on 5 Aug 1829, William Christopher in his own right and as Executor of the estate of James Howard, deceased, gave a warranty deed to "Jacob Hufford, Margaret Hufford, Juliet Hufford and Henry Hufford, children of George Hufford, deceased," for 48 acres of land on Clear Creek, beginning at a corner of Joseph Eaton near a small branch, thence North 15 degrees East by Thomas Morton, etc....Evidently this purchase was completed using property of the Hufford estate (either cash or real property), or, more likely in my view, this conveyance represented the completion of a contract for deed that had been entered into between Messrs. Howard and Hufford in their lifetimes, with the conveyance of legal title a formality that followed after all the payments had been made.In that regard, I note that the recited consideration for this transaction is just one dollar.
There might have been some newspaper coverage of the murder of George Hufford.I don't know whether the Frankfort or Lexington papers from that period have survived, and if they have, whether they have been abstracted.
