OK, now I know who we are talking about.

The George Hufford you refer to was born about 1821 (age 29 on the 1850 census of Wright Township) in Ohio. He married 11 July 1844 Hester Jellison (Guernsey Co. Marriage book D, p. 7.)

There was also a John Hufford who married 26 June 1845 Eliza Jellison (D:46); I assume that he would have been a brother of George.

In addition, there was a William Hufford, also age 29 in 1850, who appears on the 6 Sept 1850 census of Clark Township, Coshocton County with wife Jane and children Wilson, Margaret and Woodward. I suspect that William of Coshocton County and George of Guernsey County were brothers; possibly twins.

It also seems likely that there was a third brother, given name unknown, born about 1817, inasmuch as George Hufford Sr. had a son under ten years old on the 1820 census, when neither George nor William would have been born yet.

I don't know for sure that this son born about 1817 would have been the John Hufford who married Eliza Jellison in 1845, because among the orphan Hufford children who appear on the 1850 census is a David, age 7 -- therefore born before John's marriage to Eliza. Perhaps there are guardianship papers in Guernsey County that would illuminate this mystery.

I guesstimate a birth year about 1790 for George Hufford Sr., but otherwise know next to nothing about him. He's definitely not the George Hufford (son of Christian & Anna Catharina Hufford) of our line. That George was born in 1766 or 1767 (age 23 at confirmation on 22 Apr 1791), and died in 1828 "at the hands of assassins" in Woodford County, Ky. (This is why there are hardly any Huffords in Kentucky -- not only did George fall victim to frontier violence, but George's brother John Hufford was killed by robbers in the spring of 1819 in or near Woodford County as well. Not long after that, the family evidently decided to move to more peaceful parts, and by 1850 there were few of the name in Kentucky -- mainly descendants of John & George's brother Daniel Hufford.)

There was a George Hufford of Virginia who, with wife Martha, may have been the parents of the John Hufford who married Margaret Darling 8 Nov 1832 in Warren County, Ohio, but that's clear on the other side of the state from Guernsey County, so I don't think the two are connected. You wouldn't expect them to be the same person since that would mean the same man had two different sons named John. Of course, with Germans in transition to English naming systems you never know. Usually all or most of the boys in a family had Johan or Hans as a formal baptismal first name, which was then disregarded in favor of the second given name.

In short, the origins of George Hufford of Guernsey County are a mystery to me. If he bought land from the federal government, the purchase documents might indicate his prior residence, so I would recommend that you look for those. For example, the patent the Zanesville Land Office gave to my 3rd great grandfather Asa Beal for the land he settled on in Morgan County gave his residence as Jefferson County, Ohio. You can get those patents on the internet now.
