During a trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City during the winter, I came across additional records that I believe may be pertinent to these Huffmans and the issues of parentage. In addition to the John Huffman who wrote a will in 1792 in Loudon Co., VA naming sons Peter, Phillip, and Henry and wife Margaret, I think we also need to consider the following:
1)       A John HUFFMAN was murdered in Monongalia Co. (W)VA on June 23, 1795 by John Gilleland whose trial was held in 1795 District Ct. One of the people providing evidence at the time of the murder was a Barbara HUFFMAN. (Monongalia County (West) Virginia Records of the District Superior and County Courts Vol. I 1776-1799 by Melba Pender Zinn.)
2)       In "Berks County [Pennsylvania] Births 1710-1780" the following birth to Joh. Henrich HOFFMANN and his wife Marg. Magdalena is listed (Records of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading.) Philipp Jacob 11 Apr 1761. HOWEVER, this same source also lists the following births to Johannes HOFFMAN and his wife Barbara (Records of Friedens Lutheran Church, Bernville, Penn twp, also known as Friedens Church.): Johannes 23 Oct 1774 Philip 20 Jan 1777 Maria Catharina 20 Jan 1778
3)       A John Huffman is listed leaving an estate in Exeter twp, Berks Co., PA in 1802. (http://www.co.berks.pa.us/rwills/s/Estates.aspx)
4)       Following the invaluable lead provided by JRW regarding the article in the Berks Co. Penn. gen. mag., I was able to find a film of the handwritten document the little summary article referred to. What the summary article did not say is that the actual record specifies, in addition to the “John Huffman jun” who is getting the Power of Attorney, the John Huffman, the father of the women, is called John Huffman II and the John Huffman "late of Berks County" whose estate the group is try to recover the legacies from is called John Huffman I. I believe, as do several professional genealogists whom I consulted at a recent Anc.com/New Eng. Hist. Gen. Soc. Conference, that this document is thus delineating 3 John HUFFMANs.
I am therefore suggesting that the Philip HUFFMAN who is involved with Abel DAVIS in financial problems is more likely the second Philip above and his parents are John and Barbara. I think it is very likely his father (and that of the women, Mary DAVIS and Elizabeth SMITH) is the John who was murdered in 1793, his mother was the Barbara who gave evidence, and that it was an older John, perhaps a grandfather, who died in Berks Co, PA, and from whose estate the young people, now living at a distance in Monongalia Co VA, are trying to gain their inheritance.
I am posting this on a couple of other message boards as well and would love to get other researchers thoughts about the issues.
Sharon
