We learn Francis J. Huff was born April 1826 in Prussia/Germany from the 1870, 1880 & 1900 census. The Francis Huff you mentioned finding in the 1840 census is a Francis Huff born about 1795/1796 in Pennsylvania, he is listed in the 1790-1800 age group. So he is not the same man as the Francis J. above.
We learn from the 1900 census your Francis J. immigrated in 1830, and is Naturalized. His naturalization papers might be helpful. They would probably be found in the county where he first settled, or soon after he settled.
In the 1860 census for Danville, Hendricks, Indiana (family # 116/118)there is a Francis Huff age 34, Ann Huff age 26 and a Suella Huff age 4 (female)This Francis is a wagon maker, it says he is born in Ohio. Wagon Maker, and Carriage Maker I would guess is the same occupation, the latter fancier. His wife Anna was born in Ohio, maybe the census taker made a mistake, and put Ohio for his birth......I do think this is your Francis J. Huff. Hendricks county isn't too far away from Clark & Floyd Counties either....
There is a marriage I found on Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958 on the family search pilot site. It reads;
Groom - Francis J. Huff
Bride - Ann L. Cherry
Marriage date - 02 Jan 1856, Franklin, Ohio. (probably Franklin County) From the 1900 census we learn that they were married 44 years, which would be in 1856. Hope this will be of some help to you.
Kathleen
