Descendants of William Sr. Huff

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM SR.1 HUFF was born Bet. 1700 - 1715 in Brunswick Co., VA, and died Abt. 1781 in Brunswick Co., Va. He married ELIZABETH LUNDY Bef. 1745, daughter of JAMES LUNDY and ELIZABETH BURCHETT. She was born Abt. 1710 in in Isle of Wight Co., Va, and died Aft. 1782 in Brunswick Co., VA.

Notes for WILLIAM SR. HUFF:
William Huff (or Hoof) (Bef 1700 - 1781 VA) was one of the earliest settlers of Brunswick Co., VA. As he and his wife, Elizabeth, later sold land in Southampton Co., VA, it is assumed that he first lived there.
The records of Brunswick, Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties, Va., Warren Co., NC and state archives at Richmond, Va. and Raleigh, NC, reveal that: On 11/4/1736, William Huff, under command of William Moseley, helped clear road right of way between Lizard and Pigeon Roost Creeks of Brunswick Co., Va. (These creeks are still so named and run out of Va. into Warren Co., NC and if traveling north on I-85 as you leave NC into Va., it is located to the east).
William Huff patented 140 acres of land on Lizard Creek, 8/30/1744. Eventually the Huff's of Brunswick Co. owned several thousand acres of land between Lizard and Pigeon Roost Creeks.
In a deed in Southampton Co., Va., William HOOF conveys to his wife, Elizabeth HOOF, 120 acres on the Meherrin River in Brunswick Co., Va. This is the same 120 acres that William HUFF patented 6/30/1743 in Isle of Wight Co., Va. (Va. Land Patent Book 22, 1743-1745).
After a 1747 land patent in Brunswick Co, William Huff was a registered voter in 1748. He appeared on the 1748 List of Voters of Brunswick Co. for the House of Burgesses.
In 1753, he received a patent for 313 acres on Pigeon Roost Creek in Brunswick Co.
In 1754 he sold 120 acres in Southampton Co on the Meherrin River. His wife, Elizabeth, appeared in court and gave her dower consent 12 Oct. 1758. They were listed as William and Elizabeth HOOF in this transaction.
In 1764, William Huff received 1101 acres between his own land in Brunswick Co and the county lines.
In 1770, William Huff, Sr. gave 400 acres of land to his son Daniel.
Another William Huff (believed to be the son of William Huff, Sr.) had 300 acres in Brunswick Co., Va. and paid taxes on this land for many years without any deed of record. Best evidence is that it was also given to him by William Huff, Sr. William Huff sold this land by deed dated 1/7/1797 to Jordan Richardson by survey of 290 acres and the deed recited William Huff and Sarah, his wife (she being formerly Sarah Gunn). Thus under William Huff, Sr.'s Will, William and Daniel did not receive lands because they had already received lands from their father, William Huff, Sr.
In 1791, Daniel Huff and William Huff executed a quit-claim type deed to the property left by William Huff, Sr. to his named son, James Huff, to clear up his title after Elizabeth's death. (If our William Huff were not the son of William Huff, Sr., he had no lawful claims to the William Huff, Sr. Estate).
On 30 Mar 1778 he made his will and it was probated on 25 Jun 1781. He listed his wife, Elizabeth, sons Daniel and James, daughter Silvia, and grandson Thomas, and "other children". His wife was to receive the plantation. Daughter Silvia was to receive a feather bed, pine table, iron pot, small trunk, riding saddle, walnut table, and 50 acres bought from John CAVIELL. Son James was to receive a walnut chest, oval table, and the land and plantation of 498 acres after wife Elizabeth died. Grandson Thomas was given a specific bequest. All other estate and Negroes were to be divided equally among the "other children".
WILL OF WILLIAM HUFF, SENR.
Brunswick Co., Va.
Dated Mar 31, 1778 Probated Jun 25, 1781
In the name of God amen I, WILLIAM HUFF SENR. of Brunswick Colony and Dominion of Virginia being of perfect mind memory, returning thanks to Almighty God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, Hoping at the general resurrection at the last day to be raised to a life eternal through the mediation and intersession of my blessed Savior Jesus Christ. And as touching my worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life after all my lawful debts are paid, I leave and dispose in manner and form as followeth.

And also I do appoint my two sons Daniel Huff and James Huff as whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament as in witness whereof I have set my hand this thirty one day of March in the Year of our Lord God One Thousand seven hundred and seventy and eight.
Signed sealed and declared by this said William Huff as his last will and testament in presence of us:
/s/William Hamilton /s/James Hamilton /s/William Huff Senr. /s/William Parham
/s/William Moseley, Sr.
No definite proof has been found to date that our William Huff Senr (or Hoof) or any other name derivative is related to other similar named families in other states.
Many have made efforts to show that this family descended from Francis Hough of early Jamestown and Elizabeth City, Va. But, this is very doubtful. All the known children of this Francis Hough seem to have stayed in England after he took his family back to London about 1640. And in like manner the 1936 efforts of Elmer Hough to show that William and Daniel Hough, disaffected Quakers of Bucks Co., Pa. went to Brunswick Co., Va. are negated by the evidence in Bucks Co. that these persons lived out their lives in Bucks Co.
Best available evidence to date and all research leads us to believe that we are of German descent. Whether we came over directly from Germany or first stopped off in England or Wales remains to be proven. It is our belief that this family came directly to the Virginia area and settled in Isle of Wight and Brunswick Co., Va.
NOTE: - REVOLUTIONARY WAR
In the Virginia Public Claims, Brunswick County 1781/1783, PG. 10 (REV WAR): Elizabeth Huff contributed 550 pounds of beef, for which she was paid 5 pounds, 14 shillings, and 7 pence. Mary Huff, Daniel Huff, and James Huff, also contributed, as well as neighbors, William Gunn, Edward Birchet, Henry Birchet, Isaac Mosely, Samuel Mosely, Daniel Holloway, Jesse Holloway, John Dupre, et al. Research shows these were indeed neighbors of our William Huff Senr., and proves this entry to be our family and may be used for any member that needs proof to join the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Generation No. 4

4. JOHN AUSBORN4 HUFF (GEORGE3, WILLIAM JR.2, WILLIAM SR.1) was born 1796 in Brunswick County Virginia, and died March 24, 1874 in Lawerenceville Gwinnett, County Georgia, Buried in Fairveiw Prepeterian Chuch Cem.. He married (1) MALINDA MARTIN December 25, 1818 in Greene County, Georgia. She was born Abt. 1796, and died Abt. 1834. He married (2) LUCRETIA GARRETT March 04, 1835 in Gwinnett Co., GA. She was born Abt. 1796, and died 1843 in Gwinnett Co., GA. He married (3) HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN September 02, 1845 in Gwinnett County, Georgia,by JP John Clower at her fathers house. She was born 1825 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and died Abt. 1890 in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

Notes for JOHN AUSBORN HUFF:
John Huff had 24 children by three wives, nine by #1 Malinda Martin, five by #2 Lucretia Garret, and ten by #3 Harriett Brown. On 10/10/1814, in Greensboro, Greene Co., Georgia, John Huff enlisted "as a substitute for (his father) George Huff, who had been drafted to serve on July 1, 1814" in the War of 1812 (War against Great Britain). He enlisted and served as a Private in the Company of Captain Thomas Dawson in the 2nd Regiment of Col. Jeptha Thomas of the Georgia Militia. During his life John Huff learned to play the violin. He was known as a Master and could play any tune that he heard. "John Huff once played with several other people, and he overheard someone say that while he was good, that a Mr. ____ was better. John Huff took this so personal that he never again played in front of anyone. He would often lock himself in a room and play his violin for hours, while his wife and children would place themselves to listen, but not be seen by him." So said his grandson, Thomas L. Huff and granddaughter, Mollie Belle Huff Guthrie who heard it from their father, Sanford Alvin Huff. John Huff died intestate March 24, 1874, at age 79 years, as evidenced by the affidavit of his widow, Harriett E. Huff, when she applied for Widow's Pension for Soldier who served in War of 1812. He was interred in the Family funeral plot at the rear of the residence. The corners of this plot were marked by very large Boxwoods. (All the graves in this plot were later removed and reinterred at the Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Georgia 120 near Georgia Highway 316). John's death was the result of a self inflicted throat cut with his razor. ..John Huff had cut his throat to "bleed" on other occasions, but the Doctors who attended him had brought him back to health. They were unable to do so on this final occasion. Some family members believe they remember references to him having been bitten by a "mad dog" that caused him to have severe headaches. The grandmother of co-author, Arnold Huff, Mrs. Ross R. Huff, stated, "The last few years of John's life, he would have frequent severe headaches, so bad that he would almost go out of his mind. The last one was so severe that he cut his throat and bled to death." Was John Huff's act to 'bleed' to reduce his blood pressure to rid himself of these severe headaches or was it a suicide? (Source: Book, John Huff of Gwinnett Co., Ga. 1796 - 1874, by G. Arnold Huff and Bryant Huff).

Notes for Adolphus Huff:
Adolphus (Dolly) Huff. The following account of 'Dollie' Huff was left by his niece, Mollie Belle Huff Guthrie (original in possession of Bryant Huff, Georgia).
"Dollie was described as quiet and affectionate and was always busy. He loved his parents dearly and strived in every way possible to please them. One cold windy day he was clearing a new ground to plant spring turnips. Bill, an old Indian, who lived over in the wild woods came by and seeing Dollie working in the cold windy weather stopped and helped him to finish the work. Old Bill, as he was known by everyone, made his living by making booze. He loved Dollie and came over and visited with the Huff's often. On this occasion he gave Dollie a little drink so he wouldn't be too cold. Someone was watching the two men and it made him jealous so he walked into Lawrenceville and reported Old Bill to the Sheriff. The Sheriff went out next day and arrested Old Bill and put him in jail. Having no money to pay himself out he had to serve his term in jail. He would not talk, but every time the Sheriff would carry his meal in, Old Bill would say, "When I get out, I'm going to kill Mr. Dollie". The Sheriff told him that Mr. Dollie did not report him. Old Bill would not believe this and vowed to kill. A few weeks before Old Bill was to be released, the Sheriff rode out to the Huff's and advised Mr. Dollie to leave. He (Dollie) wrote to his brother Masalone in Comanche, Texas and Masalone sent him train fare. When he arrived in Comanche, Masalone hid him by not allowing him out of the house until he had grown a beard. He then sent him to St. Louis, Mo. to live with a friend. After a few years he came back to Mesquite, Tx. and worked on a ranch. Working out in the winter weather with the cattle he developed pneumonia and died and was buried in Mesquite, Tx. Old Bill, the Indian, was still living and they were afraid to send him back to Georgia. This history of Mr. Dollie was told to me by my father, Elder Sanford Huff, as we would jog along in an old buggy and slow mule as we would go to Old Ivy or Sweetwater Church. When I visited with Dr. Henry Huff in Comanche he told me the same story". /s/Mollie Belle Huff Guthrie.
