John Hudgens and Martha Holloway, interesting rec.
It would appear that John Hudgens died earlier than 1758, the date most people show as his estimated death date.I found this record in my research:
Robert Hudgins: 13 June 1755. action of debt. Robert Hudgins and c. executors of John Hudgins
against James Martin. The defendant says he cannot deny he owes 10.4 pounds current money. It's
considered by the Court the plaintiffs recover 10.4 pounds John F. Dorman, Caroline County,
Virginia Order Book, 1746-1754.
and this one:
Robert Hudgens: Cumberland County, Virginia, 24 February 1756. Robert Hudgens, Drury
Hudgens, an Infant under the age of twenty one years by Robert Hudgens his next friend and John
Colquit, Executors of John Hudgens, Decd., Plts. agt. Joseph Price, Deft. In case. This day came a
jury, to wit, Gideon Patteson, John Alexander, Pritchard Field, George Chambers, James Ligon,
John Hobson, Benjamin Wilson, Robert Burton, Henry Harmen, Field Bradshaw, John Hughes, and
Richard Daniel, who say that the defendant is not Guilty of the Trover and Conversion. The plaintifs
are to take nothing by their Bill but that for their false claimour be in mercy and c. and the defendant
go without delay and recover against the plaintifs his costs, to be levied of the Goods and Chattels
of the decedent in the hands of the plaintifs or of their own proper goods and Chattels.

The question, if there is one here, are how the early Hudgens fit together.I have found earlier records, before 1750, for the following Hudgens in the Cumberland/Amelia/Caroline County areas: Ambrose Hudgens; Phillip Hudgens; William Hudgens; Robert Hudgens; John Hudgens.William Hudgens is referred to in a number of early records as William Sr.John and Robert are the earliest records found, 1739.Robert does appear on a couple of grand juries in 1736.John and Robert are referred to as "of Caroline County" in two records. That is why I looked at some of the early Caroline County records that do exist (burned county).
Any comments or thoughts? Are they brothers or father and son?
Thanks
