Don, I'm sure that very many people like me are grateful for the many years of research you have done, and for your great generosity in sharing it with so many of us.I'm one who is honor-bound not to put on the Internet data I have received from you, because I have no way of knowing whom of your informants were promised that it would not be put on the Internet. So I've made it a practice not to put my Huddleston files on the Internet, but to reconfirm from them whatever information considered to be put there.
I'm not versed at all on what kinds of things are exempt from copyright protection, and what is the lifespan of copyrights.(The U.S. Constitution says they are to "secure for limited Timesto Authors ... the exclusive Right to their writings."It doesn't say this right is endless.)
I think Mary made an important case that persons cannot copyright facts, but only creative writing. I think that even information in a copyright-protected work that is credited therein to another source would be protected by the copyright of the original source, but not by the copyright of the work that quoted the original.I wish I were a copyright lawyer when it comes to questions like that.
Anyway, Don, thank you very much for sharing with me so much of your data.
Dave
