This Sir John was the grandson of William and Isabel(Neville) born 1519 died 1577, married to Bridget, dau. of Sir Robert Cotton and Dorothy Clear/Clare. He inherited Sawston, and was instrumental in giving refuge to Princess (later Queen) Mary , when she was pursued by the forces of Lady Jane Grey in 1553, and Sawston was burned to the ground. Queen Mary, apparently, promised to help rebuild a new house, which is standing to the present day.
His elaborate funeral and burial was transcribed by the "late Dr. WM Palmer from a book of Funeral Certificates in the Bodleian Library , Oxford"
From "History of Sawston byTF Teversham)
"He left to his executors, Dame Bridget his wife, daughter to Sir Robert (Cotton) and cousin to Sir John Cotton , Knight of Lanwade, together with the said Sir John Cotton, and his eldest son Edmond Huddleston. And had issue left behind him, by the said Dame Bridget, the said Edmund his sonand Herry(Harry) William and Alice."
The transcription goes on to name the various mourners and officials who were present.
