I did some further digging and am now pretty confident that the letters were written by Julius Loring Hubbell to his father Loring Curtis Hubbell. The letters are all signed "GLH", which caused considerable confusion for me, because the letters ended up in the possession of George Loring Hubbell, who was Loring Curtis Hubbell's grandnephew. Julius was born in Naples, Italy, and someone other than the author wrote "Giulio" on several of the letters, so he perhaps used "Giulio" rather than" Julius".
Do you have any records regarding Julius's military service? I believe that he was 18 years old and living in Mobile, Alabama when the Civil War began, but I found a note in the "History of the Hubbells" indicating that he served in the Union Army.
