JAMES HUBBARTT (1785-1891) of Indiana - The Centenarian
JAMES HUBBARTT (1785 - 1891) "The Centenarian" Indian fighter, War of 1812 veteran, and river man.James Hubbartt had a long and rich life.Born in Sussex County, Delaware on 27 March 1785 James was the first in the Hubbartt line to be born an American citizen and the first to be use the double ‘tt’ spelling of the surname.
On 28 March 1809 in Orange County North Carolina he married Nancy Thomas (born 28 November 1788).Shortly thereafter they left for the Ohio Valley with James’ father John Hubbard.The Hubbartts went to Ohio along with his their cousin Ralph Smith, (and probably the Goelets)first stopping for a time in Lebanon and finally settled in Dearborn County Indiana in 1813.
James and Nancy had 10 or more children: Solomon born 1810, Richardborn 5 June 1812, Elizabeth born 27 June 1814, Jane born 15 February 1816, Charles born 15 August 1818,Edward Thomas born 1 September 1821, Mary born 1824, John, James Robinson born 18 May 1828/9,George born 20 July 1831.
James served as a Private in a company of Minutemen during the War of 1812 and the Indian War immediately before that.He served in Capt. Spencer’s, Capt. Campbell’s, and Capt. Zenor’s Company of the Indiana Militia.At one point he served under Capt. Dill as well.His pension records chronicle several units, which he was at various times a member
After the war James went into business with a man named David Bowers. Together they built and ran a boat between points on the Ohio River in Ohio and Indiana and down the Mississippi to New Orleans.
Later in life, James moved north to the center of the state in the town of Boonesville and later still Mapleton (sugar Grove), New Purchase, near what is today Indianapolis. James lived to the extraordinary age of 106 years old finally surrendering to pneumonia 28 April 1891.He is buried next to his wife Nancy in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis Indiana.
