info on Gardiner Greene Hubbard b. Aug. 25, 1822 in MA
I have searched high and low for this info for a long time and simply could not afford to buy the book so someone was kind enough to photo copy pages for me from their old book and here is what it says...
This is from the old book published in 1895 by Harlan Page Hubbard, compiled by Edward Warren Day called One Thousand Years of Hubbard History 866 - 1895.
Gardiner Greene Hubbard was a descendant of Wm. Hubbard of Ipswich, MA and the eldest son of Samuel Hubbard and Mary Ann GREENE.Gardiner was born Aug. 25, 1822 in Sweet Auburn, now called Mt. Auburn, Cambridge, MA.
His father was apparently spending the summer there at the time Gardiner was born.
Gardiner graduated from DArmouth College in 1841 and he also went to Columbian University in Washington, D.C. where he received a degree of Law in 1888, and one from Dartmouth in 1894 (that's awfully late in life to receive degrees...but that's what it says).
He was made Regent of the Smithsonian Institute in 1894.He practiced law in Boston. In Dec. 1842 he was a partner with Benjamin R. Curtis, subsequently Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and continued in the profession until 1869.
Gardiner was an extremely enterprising man and dabbled in many business ventures. He started the street railroad from Cambridge to Boston which was the first of its kind outside the city of New York. He also started the Cambridge Water Works and GAs Light Companies and served as their President for many years. He was also a member of the MA State Board of Education for eight years.
He started the first school for the deaf in this country at Chelmsford in 1866 where instead of signs the children were taught to use speech and to lip read.
He was also the President of the National Geographic Society and in this he took a very active interest.
He also had business interests in his son-in-law, Alexander Graham Bell's new company called Bell Telephone.
Gardiner Greene Hubbard is 9th in descent from William Hubbard of Ipswich, MA and 8th in descent from his son the Rev. William Hubbard of Ipswich.
