Clark Hubbard, father of John Hubbard of Indiana??
Hello all. I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, but I have come to the conclusion that Clark Hubbard is NOT the father of the John Hubbard that married Nancy Weddle about 1816 in Hawkins Co.TN. Elizabeth Mueting in "The Weddle Book" has long been the source of that information.
John and Nancy are my 3G-grandparents. John was born in 1797 in NC,at some point was in Hawkins Co. TN and was in Monroe Co.IN by 1830, and living next door to Thompson Wedle(sic), David Wedle, and Thomas Wedle(Nancy's father).
I recently found in a book of marriages in Halifax Co. VA.1801-1831,the following:
"5 December 1803. Clark Hubbard & Lucy Palmer, dau. of Elias Palmer who consents. Sur. John Palmer. Wit. John Palmer & Thomas Palmer. Md. by the Rev. Robert Hurt. P. 53."
Clark is found in a list of taxpayers from Halifax Co. VA in 1810 claiming 2 slaves and 2 horses.
In 1820,1830,and 1840 Clark is in Wilson Co. TN in the Census. In 1850, he and Lucy are in Cannon Co. TN, along with some of the children.
In a book of will abstracts from Cannon Co. TN the following is found:
"(Page 138)
Clark Hubbard, Will. Wife: Nancy.(this is probably a transcription error). Sons: Harmon C.; John S.; Nulen D; William S.; Eleas(sic) P.; Daughters: Hanah P. Venay(sic); Elizabeth L. Medow(sic); Marthy Ann Kennady; Sarah H.(last name illegible). Slaves: Selah; Hanah; Susan. Executor: Anthony Owen. Witnesses: C.B. Odem; B.A. Hancock. Will signed 21 Oct. 1854, proved 7 Mar. 1859."
In the 1850 Census in Cannon Co. living next door to Clark and Lucy are H.S. Kenedy and wife Martha A. Kenedy and 4 children. Martha is 30(b.abt.1820) and says she was born in TN. She is named in the will.
Living nearby are William S. Hubbard and wife Nancy and 7 children, he is 38(b. abt. 1812), and says he was born in VA.He is also named in Clark's will. Living next door to him is James W. McAdoo and wife Elizabeth L. and 4 children, she is 32(b. abt. 1818) and she says she was born in VA. She is also in Clark's will, tho the transcriber badly misspelled McAdoo as Medow.
Next is the mystery of the son, John S. Hubbard. In a book of reminiscences by Wiley M. Crook, he says his uncle John Hubbard made a speech at a day meeting at old Unity (Baptist) Church in 1857 in Henderson Co. TN when Wiley was about 13. This has supposedly been the John Hubbard of Indiana. That seems unlikely that he would travel to Tennessee from Indiana to preach, a long ways to travel in those days. I looked in the 1850 census for Henderson Co. TN and sure enough, there is John S. Hubbard, wife Maria and a 6 year old daughter. John is 41(b. abt. 1809) and says he was born in VA. This is likely Clark's son, and also the uncle of Wiley Crook. There are also several Crooks in Henderson Co.
It appears to me that Clark was in Halifax Co. until 1818 and then went directly to Wilson Co. TN and was never in Hawkins Co. TN. I wanted to toss all this out there for other Hubbard researchers to chew over, and I would like to hear anyone else's thoughts on the above. I have looked for other Clarks and have not found any the right age to be my John Hubbard's father. Has anyone else found one?? If anyone wants the exact titles of the books quoted above and authors, let me know.
Thanks.
Diane Hubbard Jones
