Hi Laura,
Your daughters have *your* mitochondrial DNA, not their father's. An mtDNA test on them would tell you something about your mother's mother's mother's line, not his. In that case, you might have as well test for that yourself.
Just as mtDNA passes from mother to child, the Y chromosome passes from father to son. Naturally, since they are not male, they don't have Y chromosomes so cannot take that test.
The leaves autosomol DNA, which gets mixed up considerable from one generation to the next, and is very difficult to analyze since the recombination of the DNA is random, unlike mtDNA and the Y chromosome. It's also more expensive than the others.
But the paper trail is exactly what these organizations look at. If you have that, and it's well developed, then you're golden.
