Hi Patricia,
This Howland family is in my family, too. It traces back to Henry Howland, b. 1564 England. His son, Henry, is my 8th great grandfather through my Cudworth/Andrews line. I was looking in Rootsweb and I found a posting for Borden. It claims that he married 3 times to the Howland sisters, Abby, Mehitable, and Maria, daughters of Borden. It claims that Mehitable, his second wife was the mother of Charles that you were asking about. I don't know if this has been berified, but it may give you something to look into further.
